Surfing in shallow water; my rear middle fin broke off. Should I leave it as a twin fin or get a new rear fin?
So in my 3 fin "fun board" the rear fin broke off and got lost. Does it make much of a difference if I am missing the rear middle fin? Is it fine if I surf my board as a twin fin now. What are the advantages/disadvantages??? Thanks
Define "broke off and got lost". If it was a glassed in fin, you probably have some big time leakage problems, and you are in need of repair. If it was a removable fin system, same this goes if you pulled the fin box out. If just the fin is broken, I am sure you can ride it, but the side bites don't have enough surface area to equal a twin fin set up. besides, twin fins can be tricky to turn, especially if the tail configuration was meant for a 2+1 set up.
let's face it, people ride all sorts of bizarre stuff. And. if you are a relative novice, you probably won't notice the difference anyhow. Most importantly, it is a question of possible damage and leakage. Get over that hump first.
Your best bet is to go to a good local surf shop, where the surfers there can give you some good advice, and arrange fro repairs, if needed. Surf shops (good ones of course, not bathing suit stores that pretend to be surf shops) are the right place to get surfing information. You will get reliable, one to one service from people who are in the surf industry, not a bunch of kids on line who may know less about surfing than you do.
