how deep can a human dive with just a plain wetsuit and air tanks?
Hi.
Assuming that the air tank in question contain normal, compressed atmospheric air (78% Nitrogen N2 , 21% Oxigen O2 , 1% rare gases ) the maximum allowable depth should be 90 meters(10 Bar pressure) .
Over that depth the parcial pressure of the O2 at 21% in the mix of gases become toxic and dangerous for the organism.
This is why,professional divers use mix of different gases
( Helium and reduced percentages of O2) yet starting from depths of 50 meters sometimes ( 6 Bar).
Dry suit too,are used in case of professional works done at,or deeper, such depths to avoid the problems, for the body, of the cold .
In water,your body,loses heat 25 times faster than in air.
Mostly,in these "dry suits" is pumped hot water.
Another gas that can "set" the depth limits is Nitrogen ( N2) ,that depending from the person ,can start to give problems of narcosis at 30-35 meters.
For recreational divers,the maximum depth ,has been set at 42 meters.
In order to have longer times of diving,between 0 an 42 meters,some scuba equipments can use increased percentages of O2 (and lower of N2)in the " mix of compressed gases",allowing the diver to stay longer times in depth.Just,because the problem of toxicity of oxigen ,in such case ,is extremely important to monitor the maximum depth with accuracy.
20-30 years ago,in Mediterranean sea,divers fishing red coral,were going deeper than the 90 meters,with normal compressed air,but accidents happened.
They were able,when new technologies appeared,to lower the risk,using gas mixes of Helium-Oxigen,dry suits etc.
The record,in the case of using the new gas mixes ,is 750 meters. Won from the pro divers of the french firm "Comex",years ago.(Going at the depth with a "steel bell",using particular mix of gases,dry suits with hot water,and a team of tens of people monitoring the exploit)
