How much could I sell my 1998 Toyota Camry for? It has some issues.?
I have a 1998 Toyota Camry with 165,000 miles on it. Recently it did not pass the state emissions test (Virginia) and the mechanic said it is an electrical problem that needs fixing (there is an engine light on the dashboard). Besides this, the car leaks oil and my mechanic said it is time to get rid of it and buy a new car. So problems would be the emissions/electric issue, leaks oil, needs new tires as well. Besides this, the car runs ok. It also has various dings all over the car. How much could I honestly ask for this car? Whoever buys it would have to fix the issues, and/or buy it for parts? What do you think? Thanks
This isn't the answer you probably want to hear (or do want to hear), but the answer is to sell your car for whatever the average used 1998 toyota camry sells for on the market. From an ethical stand-point this is considered a bit inappropriate, but this is actually a classic scenario in economics. People will assume your car is worse than the asking price and thus offer you less (that's why cars that have only been driven for <100 miles and have no problems end up selling for 20% less than new quite often). Up to you on the price to sell it at. Start at the market price and if you can't do that, then lower it a bit. It's assumed all used cars are crap in the market. Hope that helps.
