fluid, magnetic, vs roller cycling trainers?
i heard fluid is smoother that mag. but how big of difference is there and is it manageable. one of my main reasons for a trainer is base miles. i would like to spend up to 6 hours(or maybe less ha ha) at a hr between 120and 145 so very boring was thinking a trainer would be nice with some clamp on aero bars so i could play video games and rack up time, not to say it wouldn't be possible on rollers but that would be some balance! but the idea of being able to sprint and climb in my living room is very tempting. anybody have experience with both methods? thanks
good answer but i guess my main reason for a trainer is when i ride outside i have a constant need to not look slow. a trainer would let me sit inside and stay in my zone. does getting out of the "zone" during base miles ruin your work? or is a little hard effort ok?
I've used both .. and find it difficult to tolerate more than about 45 min on either. That said, the experience is different. A mag trainer holds the bike and all you have to do is turn the pedals. You can let your mind wander. Rollers are much more demanding of the riders attention. They are also more difficult to learn to use, imposing a bit of a learning curve. However, rollers force a smoother pedal stroke (otherwise you risk coming off) and feel much more natural than a mag trainer. Most cyclists I know would recommend rollers for those serious about becoming a better cyclist, and trainers for those wanting bike specific exercise. Both have their place, but for me I far prefer to ride in the cold outside than inside on either a trainer or rollers.
